Workflow (Design Digital Work Instructions)

Guide to creating and managing AR-enabled workflows for Asset Types, used in manufacturing and maintenance operations.

Overview

The Workflow section in the Work Assist module enables users to create, generate, and organize digital workflows associated with specific Asset Types. These workflows act as digital standard operating procedures (SOPs), guiding technicians through step-by-step instructions with attached images, videos, and 3D resources.

Workflows are crucial in industries like aircraft manufacturing, automotive assembly, and plant maintenance, ensuring consistent execution, traceability, and quality control.

Prerequisite: Asset Type Selection

Before accessing the Workflow tab, select an Asset Type from the left panel under Work Assist → Assets. Without selecting an asset type, the workflow tab remains inactive since workflows are asset type-specific.

Example: Select Aircraft as the Asset Type to begin creating related workflows.

Accessing the Workflow Tab

  • Navigate to Work Assist → Assets.

  • Choose the relevant Asset Type.

  • Click on the Workflow tab at the top navigation bar.

  • The list displays:

    • Workflow name

    • Number of steps

    • Create Workflow — for manual workflow creation.

    • Generate Workflow — to auto-create workflows using a PDF file with procedural steps.

    • Click a workflow to open it.

Workflow Details

The workflow page includes:

  • Workflow name

  • List of steps

  • Search steps

  • Add Step button

  • Reorder steps by drag and drop

  • Hover actions on each step

Editing a Step from the List

  • When you move the mouse over a step, a pencil icon appears

  • Click the pencil icon to:

    • Open the step editor directly

  • Quickly update the step without opening the full workflow header view

This provides a faster way to modify steps.

Creating a Workflow Manually

1

Create Workflow

  • Click Create Workflow.

  • A modal will appear prompting for a workflow name.

  • Enter a descriptive Workflow Name (e.g., Airplane Turbine Assembly Process).

  • Click Create Workflow to proceed.

Once created, the workflow will appear in the list under the selected asset.

Generating a Workflow Using PDF (AI-based Feature)

This feature allows automatic workflow generation using the AI-powered Gen AI Workflow Creator.

1

Generate from PDF

  • Click Generate Workflow.

  • In the modal, click Choose PDF and upload a document (e.g., standard operating procedure, maintenance manual, or assembly instruction).

  • Click Generate.

The system automatically extracts text, images, and step structures to create a complete workflow draft.

This saves setup time and minimizes manual data entry errors for repetitive or document-based processes.

Managing Workflow Steps

Once a workflow is created, click its name to open the Workflow Detail Page. Here, you can add, edit, and organize workflow steps to define detailed instructions.

Key Sections:

  • Workflow Header: Displays asset type, creation date, and update date.

  • Add Step: Add new step instructions.

  • Save Re-Arranged Steps: Reorder the sequence of existing steps.

  • Delete: Remove workflow entirely if no job references exist.

Adding Workflow Steps

1

Open Add Step

  • Click Add Step to open the step creation page.

2

Fill Step Details

Fill in details as follows:

  • Step Name* → Enter a concise, action-based title (e.g., “Fix the turbine shaft”).

  • Description → Add detailed procedural text explaining the step.

  • Quick Tips → Provide best practices, safety notes, or operational reminders.

3

Attach Resources

Attach supporting resources such as:

  • Images, Videos, or Documents (e.g., reference images or technical manuals).

  • 3D Objects or AR Anchors for augmented reality guidance.

  • Tools or Considerations to specify required instruments.

4

Evidence & Templates

  • Under Is Evidence Required?, choose:

    • Yes → Technician must submit image or video proof.

    • No / Optional → Evidence capture not mandatory.

  • Select a Data Entry Template (if available).

5

Save Step

  • Click Create Step to save.

Reordering and Managing Steps

1

Reorder Steps

  • Drag the grip icon beside each step to reorder.

2

Save Re-Arranged Steps

  • After repositioning, click Save Re-Arranged Steps to persist the new order.

3

Delete Workflow

  • Delete a workflow entirely if there are no job references. Deletion is restricted if dependencies exist.

This ensures that the workflow follows the correct operational order for technicians during execution.

Example: Step 1 – Take the shaft as a base part. Step 2 – Fix the turbine assembly on the shaft. Step 3 – Tighten the retaining bolts and validate balance.

Example Use Case

Example: In an aircraft manufacturing setup, a technician creates a workflow titled “Airplane Assembly Turbine Engine.” The first step is “Take the shaft as a base part,” with associated 3D visuals. Subsequent steps include turbine assembly and alignment. AR Genie’s Work Assist automatically links these steps to the assigned asset, ensuring consistency in assembly procedures.

Notes

Tip: Combine Generate Workflow with manual edits to fine-tune step accuracy.
